The ST-P-OM Optical Detector uses a simple yet effective design. It features a chamber containing an Infra-Red (IR) LED and a photodiode positioned at an angle that prevents direct light detection. When smoke enters the chamber, the light scatters off the smoke particles and reaches the photodiode, triggering an alarm once a set threshold is exceeded.
This design makes the ST-P-OM particularly responsive to larger smoke particles, which are typically produced by smouldering fires rather than fast-flaming fires.
