Open-area Smoke Imaging Detection (OSID) by Xtralis is a breakthrough in smoke detection for open spaces. Building on the company’s legacy of pioneering very early warning smoke detection with VESDA, OSID provides reliable, cost-effective detection in environments where fire detection presents unique challenges and where ultra-early warning is not always required.
In its simplest configuration, OSID consists of a single imager—a camera-like device with a wide field of view—paired with a wired or battery-powered emitter positioned roughly on the opposite wall. The emitter transmits coded infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) light signals to the imager. When smoke particles disrupt the reception, the imager triggers an alarm. The dual-frequency design allows OSID to distinguish between genuine smoke and non-threatening objects such as insects, steam, condensation, and dust, drastically reducing false alarms.
3D Volumetric Coverage
A major advantage of OSID is its ability to provide true volumetric coverage. Up to seven emitters can be placed within the field of view of a single imager, each at different heights. The imager’s wide horizontal and vertical viewing angles enable three-dimensional coverage, offering flexible system design and potential cost savings. Unlike other volumetric technologies, OSID delivers absolute calibration for consistent performance regardless of lighting conditions, smoke colour, airflow, or other environmental factors.
