The Orbis Heat Detector range includes six heat detector classes, providing reliable fire detection for a wide range of environments where smoke detectors may be unsuitable.
Under the EN 54-5 European Standard, heat detectors are classified according to the maximum ambient temperature in which they can operate safely without causing false alarms. The classifications range from A to C, with Class A further divided into A1 and A2.
Detectors can also be identified by a suffix indicating their operating principle:
All Orbis Heat Detectors are tested as either static or rate-of-rise devices and are classified as A1R, A2S, BR, BS, CR or CS.
Operation
Orbis Heat Detectors feature an open-web casing, allowing air to flow freely around the thermistor. The thermistor measures the surrounding air temperature every two seconds, while an integrated microprocessor stores and analyses the temperature readings.
The microprocessor compares the measured temperature against pre-set values to determine whether the defined alarm threshold has been reached.
For rate-of-rise detectors, advanced algorithms monitor how quickly the temperature is increasing. This enables a fire to potentially be detected earlier than with a static heat detector.
Static heat detectors respond when a predetermined temperature is reached, whereas rate-of-rise detectors monitor both the temperature and its rate of increase. Rate-of-rise detection is generally preferable unless rapid temperature increases are a normal part of the environment being protected.
