A refuge remote unit provides clear, hands-free, two-way communication between occupants in a refuge area and the building control point (or fire officers) during an evacuation. It is a Type B outstation, as defined in BS5839-9:2011, and is intended for use by members of the public and disabled persons who may require assistance.

To comply with BS5839-9:2011, one refuge remote unit should be installed in each refuge area. The recommended mounting height is 900–1200 mm from floor level, measured to the centre of the unit.
